Abstract
Purpose: The aim of this study was to measure the cortical bone thickness of the infrazygomatic crest area in individuals with non-syndromic unilateral cleft lip and palate (UCLP) with maxillary expansion using cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT). Materials and Methods: CBCT scans were obtained from 12 Thai non-syndromic UCLP patients with an average age of 14 years. Five horizontal and 8 vertical reference planes were drawn at the infrazygomatic crest area, and the cortical bone thickness was measured at 40 intersection points on the cleft and non-cleft sides. Results: The mean cortical bone thickness of the 40 measured points was 1.25 + 0.53 mm. on the cleft side and 1.35 + 0.53 mm. on the non-cleft side with no significant difference. The greatest mean cortical bone thickness was measured at the most superior part while the thinnest mean cortical bone thickness was found at the most inferior part. Conclusion: Potential anchorage on the infrazygomatic crest area in unilateral cleft lip and palate patients should be at supero-posterior locations.
